Will Dynon keep making the D6/D60 and D10A/D100 Series of products?

Dynon plans to offer (what we now call) the "Gen 1" products for the foreseeable future. Many current and potential customers want just the simplified feature set of the D6/D60 and the much more complete feature set of the D10A/D100 products. The size and form factor of the D6, D10A, and EMS-D10 make them ideal replacement instruments in existing panels.

What new features are, and will be included SkyView?

The most notable differences between SkyView and Dynon's "Generation 1" products are that SkyView offers a 10" display, SkyView offers synthetic vision and moving map, and SkyView offers considerably more expansion and redundancy than Dynon's Generation 1 products.

Near term, Dynon's priority for SkyView feature implementation (now that SkyView is shipping), is to achieve full feature parity with Dynon's "Generation 1" products, including autopilot and to complete SkyView's map and synthetic vision features.

Dynon provides an online features table that details which features are already present in SkyView, which are in development, and which are planned for future implementation.

When will SkyView be available and how much will SkyView cost?

Dynon began accepting orders for SkyView on December 1, 2009 (as promised) and began shipping on December 4, 2009. SkyView pricing is listed here, and is, also as promised, Dynon priced!

Other products seem to offer similar functionality, but are currently shipping. Why should I wait for Dynon?

As of December 4, 2009, SkyView is shipping from stock, so no more waiting for SkyView!

Comparing screen shots of SkyView against the competition can show you a lot in many cases. Some of the competition's displays are severely limited by blocky, low-resolution, low frame-rate graphics that don't feature the color depth that SkyView offers. Look at the fidelity and legibility of the moving map and synthetic vision in particular. Unlike most of the other products on the market, SkyView is built with modularity in mind. This will let you add features through module additions as your needs change and budget permits. This modular approach also means that in the unlikely event that you experience a problem with your product, you won't need to send the whole system back for repair - only the affected module need be removed. And of course, you can expect the Dynon pricing, performance, and reliability. Dynon products are designed, assembled, and supported here in the US.

Is the 7" version of the SkyView display the same size as Dynon's D100 series?

Not quite. The cutout needed for the SV-D700 display is bigger than the current D100 series, so panel modification will be required for retrofits. Also, SkyView displays mount directly into the panel (no mounting tray like the D100 series). The Skyview Installation Guide is available for download. What is the screen resolution of the SkyView displays

SV-D1000 resolution is 1024x600 pixels. SV-D700 resolution is 800x480 pixels.

Is it a fair assumption that the engine monitor will be some sort of black box/breakout box that can hide behind the panel.

Yes. The SV-ADAHRS-200/201 and SV-EMS-220 modules are installed remotely from the displays.

When installing the SV-ADAHRS-200 / 201, how should it be oriented in the fuselage? Connector forward like the remote compass for the original Dynon products?

As SkyView originally shipped, the SV-ADAHRS-200 / 201 must be oriented with the pneumatic ports forward. A future SkyView software update will allow the SV-ADAHRS to be reversed so that the pneumatic ports can be orientated towards the tail.

How far behind the initial release of the base screens and AHRS will the engine monitor be?

The SV-D700 / SV-D1000 displays, the SV-ADAHRS-200/201, and SV-EMS-220 were all released simultaneously on December 1, 2009.

Will all of the SkyView modules use the DSAB as the communication network?

SkyView Network is Dynon's next generation avionics bus that is redundant and much faster than DSAB. Because of these enhanced capabilities, Dynon's current-generation products cannot interoperate with a SkyView Network.

Dynon autopilot servos are the only Dynon product* that will work with both the "Generation 1" systems and SkyView. Servos that are already installed can be upgraded in place to work with SkyView (or sent back to Dynon for upgrade), and servos shipped as of December 1, 2009 will work with both Generation 1 and SkyView.

  • Well, technically, harnesses for the EMS-D10, EMS-D120 and EMS connector of the FlightDEK-D180 will also work with the SV-EMS-220.

Will the HS34 and the AP74 become obsolete for this new architecture or will they still be required/complement the new system?

Because SkyView displays have knobs/joysticks, the enhanced controls available on the HS34 and AP74 aren't needed for SkyView.

Will the SkyView radio/transponder interface only work with the planned Dynon Comm and Nav radio products, or continue to work with radio's such as the SL-30 and the G430W?

It will work with some external radios (like the SL-30) in the beginning and then more products farther out. An ARINC converter module is "in process". See online features table for the most recent updates on planned SkyView features.

Is the plan to bring SkyView up to the ability to create a fully redundant system in regards to dual ADAHRS, dual networking, etc along with redundant serial port inputs to redundantly support external data sources in a dual screen setup if one screen dies?

As originally shipped, SkyView can use redundant ADAHRS (SV-ADAHRS-200 is primary, SV-ADAHRS-201 is secondary). "Dual Networking" is also a capability as SkyView originally shipped (the SkyView Network wiring includes redundant data and power).

Will the serial interfaces for externals be on the SkyView Displays or in a separate black box behind the panel?

Each SkyView Display has 5 serial ports (one of which is intended for use for the Dynon GPS Receiver).

What will drive the FD, HITS, ext? Are you going to be adding flight planning, synthetic approach capability and AP sequencing features similar to some of the competition or is all of this stuff going to be driven strictly by external data sources?

Over the long term, yes to all of those. The initial release of SkyView will ship with only a basic moving map feature, with more advanced moving map capabilities to follow at some future date(s). The long-term plan is to do full IFR flight planning (of course, you'll need a certified GPS source like a 430 to actually file /G and generate guidance that can be legally followed). External data sources will be secondary goals for us, not the primary source.

Will you have a GPS option to drive the map and all the other GPS driven features?

Yes, the SV-GPS-250 GPS Receiver will be available at the same time all the other SkyView products are initially available.

Which of the current probes / accessories / brackets will be compatible with the next generation?

COMPATIBLE: All engine and temperature probes, AOA/Pitot probes, Autopilot servos, encoder converter module

NOT COMPATIBLE: EDC-D10A remote magnetometer, mounting brackets and trays, expansion modules (HS34, AP74 - see below for details)

Engine harness pinouts are expected to remain the same, but primary wiring harness pinouts will be different.

What if someone wants the new system plus a D10A? Or, you have a D180 and want to display engine info on the new screen?

The EFIS-D100, EMS-D120, FlightDEK-D180, EFIS-D10A, and EMS-D10 will all still be for sale for the foreseeable future. We are not canceling any of our current products. Over time, the D100, D120, and D180 will likely phase out in favor of the next generation system equivalents, which will have all of the same capabilities and much more.

All of our products will be supported for years - with repairs, technical support, and any bug fixes that are needed. There is no way that Dynon would ever stop supporting a past customer. We think one of the reasons we've been successful is that we've tried our best to support all of our customers, and that will continue to be the case. Call us with a question or a problem on an EFIS-D10, a product we haven't sold for over 4 years, and we'll still help with any question or problem you may have.

That being said, we are going to be winding down new feature development on the current series of products after the autopilot is released. After four years, we're reaching the limits of what we're able to do with the computing power in the current products. The major features that our customers have been asking for - such as synthetic vision, moving map, thin screens, etc - are not features that we can implement on our current hardware.

We've also learned a lot with the last generation of products, and to remain competitive we need to take all of that knowledge and translate it into the best avionics we can possibly build. To do this effectively and efficiently, we have we have to draw some lines between what we have now and what we'll be building next. For example, making DSAB work between the current and new products would be a huge software effort. If we put our limited resources there, development all of our products would slow down, and we're already a busy bunch over here.

We believe there's an easier way to cross the compatibility border, and that's the offer for trade-in credit on old units. If you are interested in the new system, then we'll take what you have and give you credit towards the next system. It's win-win: you get the new system, a new warranty, and we get to focus on our new product development.

We think that this trade-in program is a type of support that is uncommon in fast-moving technology (will Apple give you credit for your 2 year old iPod, or Dell for your old laptop?), but we want to do it anyway. We really do appreciate all of your business, and we want you to continue to grow with us. What's better than being sure that your past financial investment will continue to be an investment in the latest products from Dynon?

Will the Moving Map/GPS functionality be an add-on to existing Dynon systems with the addition of a next generation screen and the corresponding module?

Unfortunately, the D10A/D100 series does not have the computing horsepower required to be able to offer a map, nor the user interface that we think is required (the next generation has a joystick to pan around the map). As mentioned above, feature development on our current generation or products will wind down as we concentrate our resources on our next generation of avionics.

For those of us with existing engine monitors from Dynon, will the new generation products be backwards compatible with the connector and sensors?

The current EMS harness and sensors will plug right in.

How about an interface with satellite WX receivers?

We will have weather at some point, but we can't promise compatibility with a specific device yet.

Where will the pitot/static lines connect and how big is the ADAHRS?

The pitot/static lines will go to the ADAHRS box. It's not much bigger than the current EDC-D10A.

One of the things that attracted me to the existing Dynon product line is that Dynon has its own dedicated RTOS-like software stack. Some other vendors use commercial OSes like WinCE which makes me a bit uncomfortable. What is general architecture of the new software platform?

The new system will run a stabilized, minimal Linux kernel for the display. The remote boxes like the AHRS, EMS, servos, etc still run with no OS, and the screen is managed by a no-OS micro.

I have a D100 and a D180 (two ADAHRS) with an HS34 module and AP servos that I plan to keep. Not knowing the details of your design, will I be able to just add a SkyView screen and your GPS receiver to incorporate the moving map functions and complement my existing instruments, or will I have to also add a third ADAHRS with the NG hardware to incorporate the moving map functions?

To display ADAHRS data on a SkyView display requires a SkyView ADAHRS module. To display maps, SkyView displays require GPS data.

Will the next generation AHRS be less dependent on pitot aiding than the current versions?

Version 5.1 of the current generation of products adds GPS assist. When a Dynon Avionics EFIS is upgraded to version 5.1 and has a GPS connected to it, GPS ground speed can be automatically substituted for airspeed when the EFIS detects that the airspeed indication has failed (usually because of an iced, blocked, or otherwise disconnected pitot). When this happens, the EFIS annunciates that its attitude indication is in a “GPS Assist” mode. The EFIS display also shows GPS ground speed next to the failed airspeed indication to help the pilot maintain situational awareness. Most importantly, when in GPS Assist mode, the attitude provided by Dynon EFIS systems continues to be accurate.

This GPS assist feature will be included in the SkyView System.

How do I wire SkyView autopilot servos?

The seven Servo wires are for:

4 - Two sets of twisted pairs for two SkyView Network connections

1 - Power connection

1 - Ground connection

1 - Quick Disconnect, to be connected to a switch on the control wheel or stick

They are connected into the aircraft wiring as shown in this diagram: Servo Wiring Diagram
